How I Got Started with Newborn and Baby Photography
I get asked all the time out I got into newborn and baby photography. I suppose it's similar to most photographer's stories in that it was out of complete desperation to capture each and every moment of our own little one's lives. I was a very young mom and had my first baby while going to college to get my Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education. I had wanted to be a teacher since about 9th grade and I figured that was the only path school would lead me down. Once I had my daughter I always had this feeling of dread when leaving her to go back to the classroom and I quickly realized I didn't want to miss any more time with her while she was so little.
I asked a local photographer if she would mentor me in how to use my camera and a little bit of photoshop only thinking that it would help me take better pictures of my own kids. Once I got started I completely fell in love and took pictures of anything and everything! In the beginning I did couples, bridals, families and toddlers and really became fascinated in the uniqueness of newborn photography!
I knew I wanted to start out right and flew to Oklahoma in 2012 to mentor with one of the best newborn photographers in the country. I needed to learn posing, safety and lighting before I felt comfortable handling these tiny babies! Once I got home I completely converted my formal living/dining room into my studio space and it turned out to be the perfect place! I put in storage for my backdrops and props (so many props!), created a hanging system for my hats and headbands, put color coded baskets full of the softest wraps out and hung canvas's of the work I took at the workshop all over the walls.
I quickly realized how important it was to have my own space to create and it's one of my very favorite places. Since then I've refined it by adding a seating area for parents with a snack station, rehung new images as my style as changed and added even more storage for the never ending prop collection. I absolutely love being able to provide a special place for my clients to come and know that it has been designed with their comfort in mind.
Over the years I've continued to upgrade equipment, take updated workshops so I'm continually keeping up on my safety techniques and learning new ways to keep my clients pictures unique.
I am so grateful for this work and all of my clients who have trusted me with the newest precious members of their families!
