I had the hardest time choosing a theme for my own son when he turned one. I went back and forth between picking a color I liked and doing a gorgeous balloon garland, and then thought maybe I'd like to do a woodland theme or maybe elephants and none of them seemed right. I wanted something that really captured his personality but was also sentimental to our family. Living in Salt Lake City, we get to spend a ton of time up in the mountains hiking together and we have so many precious memories up there. After thinking about how much we loved to be together in the mountains, I knew I wanted to do a s'mores/camping theme for his cake smash session! It turned out absolutely perfect and they are still some of my favorite pictures of him 3 years later.
A first birthday is such a huge milestone and such an exciting time for your family to celebrate! There is so much pressure to make it special and memorable for your baby since they only turn one, once! So HOW do you choose a theme for your baby?
In the past I've had families who planned a trip to Disney for their baby's first birthday and wanted to do a theme that centered around that. Another family absolutely loved reading the book Where the Wild Things Are, so of course we had to do a Wild One theme! Another enjoyed putting lego's together as a family and they even brought in some special lego pieces to incorporate into the set.
So first, I'd think about what is special to your family? Did dad play football in high school? Is there a favorite movie or tv show your little one loves watching? Did you decorate the nursery all in sage green and want some pictures to match? Do you have a favorite family activity?
These sessions are completely customized, so really, the sky is the limit. And if you still have trouble deciding on a theme that you like, I'm always here to walk you through it. We can talk about different themes I've done in the past or some that are on my wish list and go from there!
